Olaf Guckelberger is a surgeon, who was born 1967 in Berlin, where he also has been raised and studied mathematics and medicine. His surgical education started in 1993 at the Department of General-, Visceral- and Transplantation-Surgery, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Campus Virchow-Klinikum under supervision of Peter Neuhaus. In 1998, he left Berlin for a two year research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Boston under supervision of Simon C. Robson, where he engaged in studies determining the role of vascular NTPDases in ischemia-reperfusion injury. After his return, he co-organized the annual meeting of the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) in Berlin, 2001 and finally became board certified in 2003. In 2006, he has been appointed consultant surgeon, followed by his habilitation (Priv. Doz.) in 2008. The boards for vascular surgery as well as visceral surgery have been passed in 2009. As of March 2010, he became the senior consultant of the department. His clinical focus related to vascular surgery, coloproctology, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, liver and kidney transplantation and minimally invasive surgery. In addition, he has been actively involved in discussions about working conditions and salaries of hospital physicians. In 2012, he was a member of the Local Organizing Committee of the 24th International Congress of The Transplantation Society with roughly 5000 participants. In 2013, he has been appointed Head of the Department for General-, Visceral- and Vascular-Surgery at Katholisches Klinikum Essen. There he successfully merged the departments of two hospital sites and expanded the surgical portfolio. After four years, in 2017, he returned to Berlin and headed the Department of General- and Visceral-Surgery at St. Joseph Krankenhaus Berlin Tempelhof. By the end of 2018, he eventually moved to Meiningen in Thuringia and became the Head of the Department of General-, Visceral- and Vascular-Surgery at the Helios Klinikum Meiningen. In June 2022, he stepped down from this position and became the Head of the Section for Oncological Surgery of the Upper Abdomen at the same institution in part time. Besides he gains some experience in robotic surgery.
